This project is part of phase 2 of the programme and focuses on piloting the implementation of appropriate ecosystem rehabilitation interventions in the source zones to reduce siltation in the two catchments. It also aims to incorporate relevant maintenance measures in the catchment management plans. The project aims to find practical and sustainable solutions to reduce dam siltation. It emphasizes ecosystem rehabilitation to stimulate socio-economic development in communities within the catchment areas and to enable communities to be involved in siltation management activities. The approach involves developing long-term implementation and maintenance plans for catchment management for key stakeholders. The overall objective of the project is to test and refine the draft siltation management approach developed for rehabilitating ecosystems to contribute to the stabilization of riverbanks, enhance the biodiversity of the catchment areas, prevent further siltation in the Hazelmere Dam and Welbedacht Dam catchment areas, and restore and conserve the agricultural production potential of the soil to improve the livelihoods of local communities.
