Dam Siltation Process Controller (NQF Level 3)

The purpose of this skills program is to enable the learner to operate as a Dam Siltation Process Controller. A Dam Siltation Process Controller activate sediment processes at the dam with the purpose of reducing the amount of sediment build-up in dams according to operational, statutory and regulatory requirements. A Dam Process Controller implements the operating rules (under supervision), monitors and reports for informed decision making and management.

A qualified learner will know and be able to:

  • Inspect, operate and control physical unit processes and equipment at the dam
  • Record and report data for ensured effective functioning of the infrastructure

Minimum entry requirements: NQF Level 2 with numeracy and literacy. The typical learners will be those who are currently employed with experience in the water and related sectors, especially dam operators, to assist with minimising dam siltation to a controllable extent. The skills programme also makes provision for those that intend to be employed in water process controlling.

 

Rational for this skills programme

Water security and infrastructure investments are at risk due to siltation of dams in South Africa. Dam siltation cannot be completely prevented or eliminated but can be controlled by employing various practices during the process of storing water in a dam. This skills programme addresses the workplace needs assocaited with the operations and control of siltation processes at a dam in order to support dam siltation management. The sector will benefit from a pool of skilled and qualified Dam Siltation Process Controllers by providing the skills to activate sediment control processes at the dam with the purpose of reducing the amount of sediment build-up in the dam’s infrastructure.

 

Upon completion, learners may pursue the following occupations within the water sector; Assistant Infrastructure manager, Dam manager or Senior control officer. In addition, learners may also pursue further studies in:
