Dam Siltation Manager (NQF Level 8)

The purpose of this skills programme is to enable the learner to operate as a Dam Siltation Manager. A Dam Siltation Manager implement dam siltation management strategies, manage the operations and maintenance of dams, monitor dam sedimentation and establish partnerships with stakeholders for collaboration and economic gain.

A qualified learner will know and be able to:

  • Implement the activities developed in the dam siltation management strategy
  • Manage and control the operations and maintenance of dams
  • Implement models to estimate the present and future silt/sediment volume in reservoir
  • Monitor, intervene and report on dam siltation/sedimentation
  • Establish partnerships with stakeholders to foster collaboration, coordination and add value

Minimum entry requirements: NQF level 6 qualification in the field of engineering with five years’ experience in the water sector. The typical learners will be those who are currently employed with experience in the water and related sectors at national, provincial and local spheres of government as well as the private sector.

Rational for this skills programme

Adequate and well-maintained water infrastructure is an essential component for economic growth to improve the quality of life and for poverty reduction. An understanding is needed of catchment systems and sediment processes sufficient to oversee activities designed to reduce dam sedimentation and enhance water supply and water storage capacity.

There is currently a shortage of the key and scarce skills required for Dam Siltation Management. This skills programme has been identified as a priority programme to provide learners with essential knowledge and skills in the workplace for both technical and managerial focus areas related to sediment and water infrastructure management.

 

Upon completion, learners may pursue occupations within the water sector, such as Water Infrastructure Superintendent. In addition, learners may also pursue further studies in:
